Only the questions about cities: where AI gets its information when it talks about Italy's cities. The picture changes from one category to the next, and every citation that goes to a middleman is one that does not reach those who run the destination.

We asked

«what are the best cities to visit in Italy?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

If it’s your first trip to Italy, I’d focus on a mix of big historic cities, food cities, and places with a distinctive atmosphere. Italy’s official tourism site highlights Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples, Bologna, and Turin among its major city destinations.

🇮🇹 My shortlist

City Best for How long
Rome Ancient history, Vatican, architecture, food 3-4 days
Florence Renaissance art, museums, beautiful center 2-3 days
Venice Canals, romance, unique atmosphere 2-3 days
Naples Pizza, street life, history, access to Pompeii 2-3 days
Bologna Food, porticoes, relaxed atmosphere 1-2 days
Milan Fashion, design, shopping, modern Italy 1-2 days
Turin Elegant architecture, museums, cafés 1-2 days
Palermo Sicily, markets, architecture, food 2-3 days

If I were planning a first trip

Rome → Florence → Bologna → Venice is an excellent 8-10 day route. They're also well connected by Italy's high-speed rail network; for example, Bologna is roughly an hour from Milan and about 1½ hours from Venice, while Florence-Rome can take about 1½ hours by high-speed train.

If you have two weeks, I'd add Naples and either Milan or a few days in Tuscany.

A few particularly good choices depending on what you want:

  • 🏛️ History: Rome
  • 🎨 Art: Florence
  • ❤️ Romance: Venice
  • 🍕 Food: Bologna or Naples
  • 👗 Fashion/design: Milan
  • ☕ Elegant, less touristy feel: Turin
  • 🌊 Mediterranean/Sicilian experience: Palermo

And don't overlook smaller cities: Lucca, Verona, Parma, Modena, Perugia, Lecce, and Trieste can be excellent additions depending on your route. Italy's tourism board specifically highlights these among its notable cities.

If you tell me how many days you have and what month you're going, I can build you a day-by-day Italy itinerary.
