We asked

«what are the best ski resorts in Italy?»

ChatGPT · gpt-5-6

Italy has an unusually strong mix of spectacular scenery, excellent food, and large ski areas. For a first trip, I’d look especially at the Dolomites, plus Cervinia and Livigno.

My shortlist

Resort Best for What stands out
Cortina d'Ampezzo Scenery & atmosphere Dramatic Dolomite peaks, elegant town, excellent intermediate skiing
Val Gardena All-round skiing Huge connected terrain, Sella Ronda, beautiful villages
Alta Badia Food & cruising Superb restaurants, wide groomed pistes, particularly good for intermediates
Cervinia Snow & altitude Very high skiing beneath the Matterhorn; linked with Zermatt
Livigno Snow + après High altitude, extensive slopes, lively town and terrain parks
Madonna di Campiglio Stylish ski holiday Attractive village, 150 km of slopes and good intermediate terrain
Courmayeur Mont Blanc & atmosphere Spectacular mountain setting, charming town, excellent food
Sestriere Huge terrain/value Gateway to the Via Lattea, with about 400 km of interconnected slopes

The official Italian tourism site highlights Madonna di Campiglio, Livigno, Cervinia and Sestriere among Italy's major ski destinations; current 2026 guides also consistently feature Cortina, Val Gardena, Alta Badia and Courmayeur.

If I were narrowing it down

For a spectacular first Italian ski trip: Cortina + Val Gardena/Alta Badia. The Dolomites are the real showstopper, and the Dolomiti Superski network gives you enormous choice.

For serious skiing and snow reliability: Cervinia. It's at around 2,050 m and connects into the Matterhorn Ski Paradise with Switzerland.

For a fun, lively week: Livigno. It's high at about 1,816 m, has roughly 115 km of slopes, and is particularly well known for its terrain parks and après-ski.

For food + beautiful cruising: Alta Badia. It's one of the places where the skiing and mountain restaurants are equally important parts of the holiday.

For a more glamorous trip: Cortina d'Ampezzo. It combines the spectacular Dolomite setting with an upscale town and was one of the principal venues for the 2026 Winter Olympics.

If you tell me your skiing level, approximate budget, dates, and whether you're going with family/friends/couple, I can narrow these to 3-4 that fit your trip.
